Boston Blades General Manager Krista Patronick has signed Brian McCloskey as the team?۪s new Head Coach. Last season, the Blades finished first overall in the regular season and went on to win the Clarkson Cup in a thrilling overtime match against rivals, the Montreal Stars.
McCloskey previously served as Head Coach of the women’s Division I hockey program at the University of New Hampshire from 2002 to 2013. Prior to that he spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach of the University of New Hampshire’s men’s ice hockey team.
"I am thrilled to have Coach McCloskey’s leadership and experience as head coach with the Blades. I know he will carry out our vision for continued excellence on and off the ice," said Patronick. "His passion for the game and his work ethic are infectious. He knows how to bring out the best in every player and I’m excited to see this team blossom under his direction."
McCloskey is a Vancouver, British Columbia native and a 1977 graduate of Dartmouth. He began his collegiate coaching career at Princeton University, where he served as an assistant for two seasons. McCloskey went on to coach at Brown University before taking the assistant coaching position at UNH in 1992. He spent one season coaching at Dartmouth, the 1997-98 season, before returning to UNH through 2013.
"This is an incredible opportunity to work with some of the top female athletes in the sport. I had the opportunity to do that previously at UNH and I’m really looking forward to continuing my work with talented and motivated hockey players," McCloskey said. "The Blades have a great history in the best women’s hockey league in the world, and it is an honor to participate in carrying that tradition forward."
Boston Blades defenseman Kacey Bellamy played for McCloskey during her college years and credits him with much of her success.
???The Boston Blades just won the lottery getting Coach McCloskey,? she said. ???He is the most knowledgeable on ice coach I have ever had. He has been my mentor since I stepped on the campus of UNH my freshman year and without him I would not be where I am today. His experience and accolades speak volumes, but it is who he is as a person that separates him from his peers.?
McCloskey and Patronick will announce the assistant coach appointments in the weeks ahead. The Blades are preparing for the CWHL Entry Draft on August 23rd, where they will have the fifth pick in the first round.
The Boston Blades will open their season on the road against the Toronto Furies on October 17th. The team?۪s home opener will be Saturday October 31, at the team?۪s new home rink, the New England Sport Centre. Season tickets are now on sale at boston.cwhl.ca.
